Vitamin and mineral Deficiency

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common in our world today. Not only in developing countries but also in developed countries such as the United States. The foods we eat either don’t have the proper nutrients or we don’t eat enough of what we should to get the proper vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin A deficiency is widespread in developing countries but hardly ever seen in developed countries. Night blindness is one of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency. Complete blindness can also occur. Vitamin A has a major role in the process by which light is converted into electrical signals in the rod cells, cone cells and photosensitive ganglion cells of the retina of the eye.

Vitamin D deficiency can result from a number of factors including: insufficient intake of the vitamin coupled with insufficient sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders and body characteristics such as skin color and body fat. Rarely, deficiency can result from a number of hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency results in one or more of the following symptoms:
• Itchy, uncomfortable or tingling tongue.
• White spots on the skin,
• Sharp stabbing, tingling pain in the palm of either or both hands.

• Facial ache, usually on only one side of the face.
